Chanukah is alive at MJM! In between birthday parties, and hearing about the story of Chanukah, the children have been exploring in all the areas of the classroom.

At the Chanukah experience table...

At the language center, they continue to 'feel' letters -- now, while spelling out Chanuka.

David was very proud of his work.

This may look like a simple activity, but the children have been taking it to the next level...

Here, Esti notices that the Shamash candle is taller than the others.

Sam uses the Shamash to light the other candles,

and Moshe strategically places the Shamash in the middle.

In the math area, the children have been working on patterning with Chanukah candles. They are learning how to read the patterns as well, reciting the order of the colors when they are finished with the activity.

Here, the children discovered the Dreidels! (They were high up on a shelf...) It was a great discovery - we took them down, and they got to help create this sorting activity for the class.

Over in the practical life area, we've introduced a safe potato peeling activity. It's a hard one, so it hasn't been the greatest hit -- but we will see where it goes next week.

Another math related activity, the children practice sequencing using numbered sequencing cards.
How do we get olive oil from olives?
1. They grow on a tree.
2. We sqeeze them.
3. The oil goes into a jar.
4. We use the oil to light the Menorah.

Here, we revamped an old activity to make it fresh and interesting. The children use special gems and Chanukah candles to create a Menorah.

With all of the above going on in the classroom, we still had time for the children to work on still life Menorah art. All Menorah drawings are hanging on a wall in the classroom. Please stop in sometime next week to take a look!

And oh! Can't forgot about the olive patterning activity!

Next week, we will continue to introduce Chanukah activities, while the children begin to create their own Menorahs to use at home on Chanukah.
And, we will continue with the Chanukah story as well.
